Key ideas

The NRI rules that matter most.

NRE and NRO

Your account decides what can go back abroad.

Money invested from an NRE account can be sent abroad freely. From an NRO account, only up to a yearly limit, with a CA certificate.

Choose the right account first.

Tax residency (FATCA)

Update your tax residency when you move.

If your FATCA declaration is out of date, your investments can be frozen just when you need them.

Keep the paperwork as current as your address.

Tax at source

Tax is deducted when you sell.

For NRIs, tax is deducted at redemption, not settled later. This affects when and how much you sell.

Plan the exit around the tax, not after it.

Tax treaty

A treaty can lower the tax deducted.

With a DTAA, a tax residency certificate and Form 10F can lower the tax deducted.

Ask for the relief you are entitled to.

Country rules

Some countries have extra limits.

Many fund houses don’t accept investors living in the US or Canada. Better to know this on the first call.

Know your own country’s rules before you invest.

First decision

NRE or NRO — and why it matters later.

You can’t invest in Indian mutual funds in foreign currency. The money must come through a rupee account, and that choice decides whether you can take it back out freely.

The one that surprises people

FATCA isn’t a ban.

It’s a reporting rule. Some fund houses decide it isn’t worth the extra work and don’t accept investors living in the US or Canada. Others accept them only on paper forms. This list changes from time to time.

FATCA

We check who will accept you — before you fill a form.

Before any paperwork, we check which fund houses currently accept investors from your country, and build your plan only from those.

  • Ireland, UK, Germany and the Gulf: rarely affected
  • US and Canada: usually a shorter list — we say so on the first call
  • No surprise rejections weeks later

Getting started

Complete KYC without flying to India.

  1. 1

    PAN and NRE/NRO account

Both must exist first. If your PAN is from before you moved, its status needs updating.

  2. 2

    Documents, attested

Passport, visa or residence permit, overseas address proof and a photo — attested the way your country accepts.

  3. 3

    FATCA and CRS form

Your tax residency and tax ID where you live. Simple, but one wrong digit causes a rejection later.

  4. 4

    Video verification

Most fund houses accept video verification. We schedule it in your time zone.

  5. 5

    First investment

Usually two to three weeks from the first call — mostly waiting for attestation.

Questions

The things people actually ask.

Where are my gains taxed — in India or where I live?
In India first, at the same rates as residents, usually with tax deducted when you sell. Whether you also pay at home depends on your country’s rules and its treaty (DTAA) with India. We explain the Indian side; please confirm the other side locally.
What happens if I move back to India?
Your residential status and account change, but you don’t need to sell your holdings. We handle the re-designation and KYC update.
Can I invest jointly with a parent in India?
Yes, though it affects sending money back and who is taxed. It’s usually cleaner to invest in your own name with a resident nominee.
Do you charge NRI clients more?
No. We are paid the same trail commission by the fund house wherever you live, and charge you nothing directly.
What times can we speak?
Evening slots for the Gulf and Europe, and early-morning India slots for North America. The booking page shows times in your own time zone.

We never hold your money. Payments go straight to the fund house.
