Long term goal
Children’s marriage planning.
A long horizon and a flexible date — the one goal where equity can do most of the work, provided the plan decides in advance when to take the gains off the table.
Who this is for
If a wedding in the family is seven to twenty years away.
A wedding is among the largest single outlays an Indian family makes, and it is usually paid for by breaking long-term savings — often the retirement money — at the last moment.
Planned early, a modest monthly amount does the job. The date can usually move a year either way, which gives the portfolio room to ride out a bad year in a way an admission deadline does not.
“Celebrate the day without borrowing from your retirement.”
What starting early is worth
A ₹30 lakh wedding today, at 6% inflation.
The same celebration, priced in the year it happens and funded over different horizons. Starting ten years earlier cuts the monthly amount by more than half.
Monthly SIP for a ₹30 lakh wedding today
Start early, pay less each month
- 20 years ahead₹9,600/mo
- 15 years ahead₹14,200/mo
- 10 years ahead₹26,000/mo
- 7 years ahead₹37,000/mo
3.9×more each month if you start 7 years ahead instead of 20
| Years away | Cost then | Assumed return | Monthly SIP needed | You contribute |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | ₹96.2 lakh | 12% | ₹9,600 | ₹23.1 lakh |
| 15 | ₹71.9 lakh | 12% | ₹14,200 | ₹25.6 lakh |
| 10 | ₹53.7 lakh | 10% | ₹26,000 | ₹31.2 lakh |
| 7 | ₹45.1 lakh | 10% | ₹37,000 | ₹31.1 lakh |
Illustrative projections. Cost inflated at an assumed 6% a year; the assumed return steps down as the horizon shortens because the portfolio holds less equity. Monthly SIP, compounded monthly. Actual returns vary and may be negative in any period. Figures rounded. Not a guarantee, and not a recommendation of any specific scheme.
How we work
Four steps, then a review every year.
- 1
Agree the number as a family
Venue, jewellery, clothes, gifts, travel and the reception, in today’s prices, inflated to the likely year.
- 2
Count the gold once
Jewellery bought over the years is part of the budget, not an extra. We include it so the same need is not funded twice.
- 3
Grow first, secure later
Equity-oriented funds for most of the horizon. About three years out, what is needed moves toward debt, so a market fall does not decide the guest list.
- 4
Review yearly
Revisit the estimate as the date firms up and step up the SIP with income — without touching the retirement contributions.
Questions we get
Before you start.
The date is uncertain. How do we plan?
Should we buy gold now for the wedding?
Could we simply take a loan when the time comes?
