Medium term goal
Self-development planning.
Courses, a sabbatical, a change of direction — funded on purpose rather than out of whatever is left.
Who this is for
If you are planning a course, a certification or a career break.
A professional certification, an executive programme, a master’s degree mid-career or time off to retrain can shape the next twenty years of work. They are also expensive, and fees rise faster than most prices.
Funded in advance, the decision is about the course rather than the loan. If the plan includes time away from work, the living costs for that period belong in the target too.
“Pay for the course before it starts, and the only thing left to decide is whether it is the right one.”
What it takes
Three plans, funded monthly.
Costs rise at an assumed 8% a year. The assumed return steps down as the horizon shortens because the portfolio holds less equity.
Monthly SIP for the ₹20.4 lakh master’s
Plan early, study without debt
- 4 years ahead₹36,000/mo
- 2 years ahead₹79,400/mo
- 1 year ahead₹1,64,200/mo
4.6×more each month if you plan 1 year ahead instead of 4
| Plan | Cost today | When | Cost then | Monthly SIP needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Professional certification | ₹1,50,000 | In 2 years | ₹1,75,000 | ₹6,800 |
| Executive or part-time master’s | ₹15,00,000 | In 4 years | ₹20,40,700 | ₹36,000 |
| Six-month career break (living costs) | ₹6,00,000 | In 5 years | ₹8,81,600 | ₹11,900 |
Illustrative projections at an assumed 6.5% annualised return for a two-year plan and 8% for four and five years, compounded monthly. Actual returns vary and may be negative in any period. Figures rounded. Not a guarantee, and not a recommendation of any specific scheme.
How we work
Four steps, then a review every year.
- 1
Price the course and the time off
Fees, travel and materials, plus the income you give up if you step away from work.
- 2
Check what your employer covers
Many employers sponsor part of the fee or offer study leave. We plan only for the balance.
- 3
Invest to the start date
Debt-weighted for plans a year or two away; some equity when the start is several years out.
- 4
Protect the rest of the plan
The retirement SIP carries on through the course. If a break is planned, its pause is budgeted in advance.
Questions we get
Before you start.
Is an education loan the better option?
What if I change my mind about the course?
Can I pause my other SIPs while I study?
